Understand customer segments

How your store groups customers automatically so you can focus your attention.

4 min readUpdated 13 May 2026

Your store automatically sorts every customer into a segment based on their buying behavior. Segments are how you spot your most loyal customers and the ones who might be slipping away.

The five segments

  • New — joined recently and may have placed their first order
  • Active — buying regularly from you
  • VIP — your top spenders and most loyal customers
  • At risk — used to buy and have gone quiet
  • Inactive — no recent activity for a long time

Where to find them

  1. 1

    Open Customers from your sidebar

Click Orders, then Customers in the left sidebar. The dashboard shows a count of customers in each segment plus headline stats like total customers, retention rate, and average customer value.

  2. 2

    Open the full directory

Use the "View all customers" link at the bottom of the Top customers card to open the directory. There you will see segment tabs (All, New, VIP, Active, At risk, Inactive) plus a Segment filter dropdown and a sort menu — pick the combination that helps you focus.

  3. 3

    Export the list

Click Export in the top right to open the Export customers page. Pick the segment you want, start the export, and your CSV is generated in the background — recent exports show with a download link once each one is ready.

Focus on At risk first

A customer who has bought before and gone quiet is often easier to win back than a brand new one to win for the first time. Reach out with a kind message or a small thank-you.

Frequently asked questions

Do segments update automatically?

Yes. As customers buy or stay quiet, they move between segments on their own. You do not have to update anything by hand.

Can I create my own segment with custom rules?

Not today. The built-in segments cover the most common groupings most stores need. If you have a more specific use case, export your customers and filter in a spreadsheet.

Can I bring in a list of customers from another tool?

Yes — use the Import customers button on the directory page. There is a separate guide on importing from a CSV.
